Not raising the debt limit would likely result in the economy plunging into another recession, another downgrade of our credit status and unnecessary harm to millions of American families. Congressional Tea Party Republicans using the threat of not raising the debt limit in order to extort policy concessions from the White House is unconscionable. Negotiating with Congressmen who take the American economy hostage in such a way is akin to negotiating with terrorists. If the Tea Party Republicans send a bill to the White House demanding policy concessions in return for raising the debt limit, the White House should veto it. Furthermore, it has a responsibility to make known to the American people this deliberate act of economic sabotage and the purely partisan purposes motivating it.
