Energy companies are certain that they are being environmentally responsible whilst extracting gas from oil shale. Energy independence is important, but not at the cost of ruining our natural resource of clean drinking water. A human can not live by drinking oil or gas. Remember how safe oil companies indicated drilling in the Gulf of Mexico is. They exceeded the capability of existing technology, and have harmed the Gulf for a long time to come.
