When a person is gravely ill they cannot 'shop' for care and medical facilities can charge whatever they see fit for that care. If, you go to an ER without medical care some hospitals charge as much as $100 for an ace bandage, you can expect to pay $500 to be triaged (put in line based on your illness/injury), and most ambulances charge somewhere around $500 just for showing up! There should be a limit to how much I should be charged for this care. My brother went to a hospital where he had his appendix removed. Just the hospital bill (not including the surgeon, anesthesiolgist, or radiology bills) was $27,000 for 3 days of room and board with an employee who comes to check on him every few hours. So he paid more than the cost of a first class flight around the world! Please cap costs!
