Regulate harmful images of women in advertisements and the media.

Created by D.M. on November 14, 2012

Gender discrimination continues to be imbedded in the minds of up and coming generations due to the unconscious, yet intentional ideas in the media and advertisements. For example, a woman's head placed on the neck of a beer bottle in an ad perpetuates the idea that women are objects. This undermines the initiatives parents are taking to raise healthy, confident, and independent girls. Eating disorders, depression, and body dismorphic disorders amongst young women must stop being ignored. Models are often frighteningly thin and underweight. We cannot let another generation of girls grow up thinking these unhealthy images are ideal and desirable. We urge the FTC and FCC to regulate gender discourses within the media and advertisements in order to fight gender discrimination.
