While it is the right of Americans to own firearms, it is also our responsibility to properly educate ourselves on firearms safety and weapons handling. But so many choose not to, and are careless with their weapons due to a lack of education about how to properly handle their firearm. Through education, accidental discharges and deaths can be averted, or at the very least diminished. As a gun owner, I am not required to take any exam, training or safety course, but as a motor vehicle operator, I am required to take a written and driving exam before I can legally drive. As such, all firearms should be regulated through mandated exams on safety and weapons handling and a practical application exam demonstrating one's knowledge. Further, mental evaluations should be performed too.
