What the "free range" classification really entails: 1) there is no official government definition or regulation of "free range", 2) the USDA definition of "free range" applies only to poultry, and 3) only requires that chickens have access to the outdoors for some period of the day - the quality of that outdoor environment is also unregulated. The "free range" label tricks consumers into paying more money for what they misguidedly believe are humane practices. We want to regulate the qualifications of "free range" and to make them meet the standards of the Humane Choice program (in effect in New Zealand and Australia), which creates and enforces a high standard of humane treatment of poultry and livestock.
