At present, domestic on-shore oil refineries emit tons of poisonous gas and generate toxic by products every year. Most of these refineries are located in densely populated areas of the country. There are many accidents that cause the release of toxic substances into the atmosphere and they are largely unreported. Children living within a 10 mile radius of a refinery have 30-40% more reported cases of Asthma, eye and skin irritations, cancers, birth defects, and chronic respiratory problems. Very young children and the elderly are most effected. Petroleum Companies must be held to the highest environmental standards as well as being held accountable for the health of the population living near these plants.
