The United States should emulate Israel's new modeling legislation by regulating the modeling industry and disclosing when computer altered images are used in advertisements. The law should ensure that all participating models have a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index) of 18.5 or above (or doctor’s note) in order to gain work, thus promoting a healthier body image and greater self-esteem among adolescents and adults bombarded by images of unattainable beauty in the media every day. If passed, the law could provide a stepping stone for greater sensitivity in the media, higher support of healthy ideals, and even possibly lower the prevalence rates among eating disorders, obesity, anxiety, depression, and other associated afflictions that increasingly affect the world today.
