Governor Jerry Brown of California has signed a series of bills which have effectively raised California's legal smoking age from 18 to 21. Though there is the argument that the state is protecting young consumers from the tobacco industry, this is in reality an infringement upon the civil liberties of adults. Once a person turns 18 he/she obtains the responsibilities along with personal decision-making skills necessary to decide whether or not to smoke. If a young adult 18 years of age can fight and die for his/her country, vote, marry, drive a vehicle, and enter legally-binding contracts, that individual should not be barred from smoking.
