As an American History teacher it is my belief the framers of the Constitution created this document to allow for change and adaptation to it as the times dictate. Moreover, our nation's founders could have never foreseen the growth and proliferation of firearms such as we have with handguns and assault rifles.
Critics of gun control claim the 2nd Amendment allows all citizens the right to bear arms. This could not be further from the truth. The Amendment claims "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of the State..."
The key phrase being "well regulated Militia". We no longer have the need for Minutemen or Militia in this nation. In fact, the continued allowing of private firearm ownership has led to countless shootings and the needless deaths of innocents.
