Before the passage of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Improvements Act of 2010 (S. 3447), the Post 9/11 GI Bill continued to pay Monthly Housing Allowance to veterans during the break periods between the Spring, Summer and Fall college semesters.
S. 3447 eliminated this pay, costing veterans thousands of dollars per year, depending on zip code, and making it difficult for veterans to pay rent without taking on a job in addition to full-time schooling. Some veterans are also using their GI Bill on unnecessary classes in order to avoid breaks; for most, breaks are unavoidable.
We urge President Obama to encourage congress to pass an amendment to the GI Bill that addresses this issue.
