The FCC created the Fairness Doctrine to ensure that all coverage of issues by a broadcast station be balanced and fair. Since the Fairness Doctrine was abolished in 1987, news coverage in the United States has been extremely partisan in nature. Programs containing lies, slander and distortion has been foisted upon the American people as "news," leading to and atmosphere of discourse and, in some instances, violence. Corporate agendas have been disguised as "news" as well.
A return of the Fairness Doctrine would return the United States to the days when news coverage was balanced, and would ensure that true freedom of speech isn't restricted.
