The time is now. In the aftermath of what happened in Newtown, CT (and similar tragedies), the President must take action to advance gun control legislation, primarily in the form of reinstating the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (1994-2004).
While the second amendment sought to ensure protection for the right to bear arms, current legislation is not remotely crafted in the spirit of which this provision was written. Assault (semi-automatic) weapons are not instruments of protection, rather they are instruments of violence.
