This will keep commercial banks such as Bank of America and Chase from using clients' money to invest in risky ventures such as the housing market. Commercial banks will not be allowed to use "off- balance sheet" calculations to hide profits and losses as in the case of Enron and Citigroup. It will make it impossible for commercial banks to enter into "shadow banking " i.e. "hedge funds" . "Shadow banking" is a short term system that requires investment banks to repay money quickly then quickly borrow again to fund their operations. When there is no money coming in again from their investors, they go bankrupt as in the case of Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers. Keeping investment banks separate from commercial banks will protect commercial depositors' assets from being gambled with.
