in 2005 Sallie Mae and other private student loan lenders lobbied to remove the 6 major protections that are afforded to private student loans. These included the ability to discharge private student debt in bankruptcy court. Many students are unable to pay due to underemployment and unemployment and are unable to repay this debt. If not reinstated at least a program on private student loans that has income based repayment and no more fees for placing these loans in forebearance.
