In 2006, the Federal Reserve ended its reporting of M3 as a measure of the money supply. In announcing it's cessation, the Federal Reserve stated that it was no longer worthwhile to collect and publish M3 data. In the time since the end of M3 reporting the United States has experienced the deepest recession since the Great Depression. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has injected massive amounts of liquidity into the financial system, raising serious concern for future inflation. To help understand better the inflation risks facing Americans, as well as the health of our financial system, we believe that a resumption of M3 reporting is of value to Americans and policy makers alike.
