The woolly mammoth once had a wide range across the modern United States before going extinct at the end of the last ice age, probably in part because of over-hunting by humans.
As the possibility of cloning the woolly mammoth comes ever closer to becoming a reality we, as a nation, should evaluate the merits of reintroducing the woolly mammoth into the wild in the hopes of creating a wild breeding population. This reintroduction would be done on federal lands, most likely in colder climates where these creatures would seldom encounter human beings.
The federal government already undertakes reintroduction efforts for many animal populations extirpated from regions by human activity; I don't see why woolly mammoths should not also get the opportunity for a second chance.
