International trade treaties like the Trans-Pacific Partnership deeply affect the well-being of American citizens; they constitute part of the law of the land, and in a democracy like ours it is unconscionable that the details of draft negotiations are kept secret.
As Senator Warren noted in her open letter to Michael Froman, nominee for U.S. Trade Representative’s office, “If transparency would lead to widespread public opposition to a trade agreement, then that trade agreement should not be the policy of the United States.”
It should be the policy of the US Government that all international treaty negotiations be transparent to the people of the United States, with open public access to all drafts during the process.
