He is classed by Amnesty International, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, National Congress of American Indians, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights, Archbishop Desmond Tutu & Rev. Jesse Jackson, to be a political prisoner.
He was arrested in Canada based on a false statements coerced by the federal government he was brought to the US to stand trial.
There were approx 40 individuals involved in the shootout but only AIM members Bob Robideau, Darrell Butler, and Leonard Peltier were brought to trial.
Mr. Robideau & Mr. Butler were arrested 1st & went to trial. A federal jury in Iowa acquitted them on grounds of self-defense.
