The 2012 election was an historic victory, for the Obama campaign, for the Democratic party, for the American people—and, for political programmers.
The software behind the Obama campaign helped to secure the President's victory in this last election. However, much of this software was derived from Open Source projects—code released to the public to use, build upon, and improve.
The campaign and the DNC would like to keep this software under wraps, away from political adversaries. While understandable, this stance is against the ethical principles of the Open software which enabled the President's victory. Furthermore, these tools could be used in other movements throughout the country, to achieve goals in line with the President's agenda.
