Since the end of World War 2, the United States military has maintained military bases in the Federal Republic of Germany. During the Cold War, when the threat of a Soviet invasion of Western Europe was very possible, these bases were both acceptable and ultimately necessary. Today however, the threat of the Soviet Union is long gone, and Germany stands as the center of the European economy, fully capable of taking care of itself and supporting its own defense. With the budget issues we currently face, it is now detrimental to the American economy to maintain these bases that no longer serve a practical purpose. The troops stationed in the bases could also be better used at home in securing our borders and actually protecting the United States from within the United States.
