Radioactive waste dating back to the Manhattan Project was illlegally dumped in the West Lake Landfill in Bridgeton, MO back in the 1970s. This waste sits on the floodplain of the Missouri River, a few miles from the drinking water intake for hundreds of thousands of people. In 2008 the EPA announced a decision to build a cover over the contamination, but recent tests have revealed contamination in the ground water around this site. It is time for the federal government to stop delaying on this issue and move this waste to a relatively safe, secure location where it is not a threat in a highly-populated area. Yucca Mountain would have been an option, but the administration needs to come up with a suitable alternative since they saw fit to kill that project after spending billions on it
