Currency is in existence to facilitate the exchange of goods and services. Pennies, once-cent pieces, whatever you prefer to call them, don't do that. They either sit at the bottom of citizen's wallets, or in jars as part of 'collections.' Yet, the US mint continues production despite the fact that millions of taxpayer dollars go into making pennies whose constituent values are worth less than the currency itself.
We are the consumers of the US, and we do not wish to wait longer for old ladies to fumble with small change trying to give the shopkeeper 'exact change.'
If removed, a suitable alternative will be devised, such as rounding prices. For example, $1.99 will be rounded to $2.00, for easier purchasing and less painstaking calculations.
