Remove the $2500 cap on tax deductions for student loan interest paid. Treat student debt equal to home mortgage.

Created by M.S. on February 01, 2014

100% of most home mortgage loans are tax deductible, but currently we can only deduct up to $2,500 in student loan interest from our taxable income each year. Many pay much more than that in interest payments, as our loans are substantial due to the rising costs in college tuition. Yet the income we spend on the principal payments and the interest is mostly taxed. Education should be treated as an asset, just like a home. If having kids and buying a home gets me substantial tax deductions, why shouldn't investing in a degree instead? We should not have to pay taxes on top of the interest for debt that is crippling to many and keeping people from being able to buy homes. There should be no limit on this tax deduction.
