Prominent Irish republican and civil rights activist Bernadette Devlin was prevented from entering the United States in 2003. At the time, Devlin had been travelling to America regularly for the previous 30 years. She was a victim of the overly broad crackdown on immigration following 9/11.
Devlin has fought extensively to protect the civil rights of minority populations in both Northern Ireland and the United States. She holds honorary citizenships in New York and San Francisco for her work. She is a former British MP and, at 21, was the youngest woman ever elected to British Parliament.
