The Mendenhall Order of 1893 attempted to steer America away from the use of the old British imperial system of measurement but failed to enact a much wider stance in the adoption of the metric system used around the globe. Even the author, Mendenhall himself, argued for the total use of the metric system to embrace logic and shed old imperial ties.
Today we continue to use this system in our public schools and health care system even though they are ROUTINELY more difficult for people to use and calculate. When my students ask me why we use inches and feet, I have no answer for them other than, "because the Superintendents and Secretaries of our nation's educational and scientific communities are lazy."
