The U.S. Food and Drug Administration official policy on blood deferral for men who have sex with other men (MSM) is as follows:
"Men who have had sex with other men, at any time since 1977 (the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the United States) are currently deferred as blood donors. This is because MSM are, as a group, at increased risk for HIV, hepatitis B and certain other infections that can be transmitted by transfusion."
This policy is outdated and it stereotypes MSM into a category of promiscuity. And to the FDA: it IS discriminatory that a heterosexual male can have a multitude of partners and still donate, but a man who had sex with one man since 1977 cannot.
