Removing the cap on Social Security withholding and lowering the rate, would restore the solvency and the progressive nature of the system. This is simple economics and common sense. Presently, the wealthiest contribute a fraction of their income while for many in the middle class, their contributions can be 6% of income. Lowering the rate would appeal to Republicans while making a more progressive solvent trust fund would protect the retirement safety-net investment that the working class has made over their lives. Social Security is an investment in our retirement, not an entitlement, yet we charge those with the greatest need to pay a larger portion of their income. This does not make sense.
