In George Orwell's Animal Farm, "Absolute power corrupts absolutely," is the message that is bounced back at us throughout. It is a book that delicately demonstrates the complexities of power in seemingly simple ways. Unfortunately, we are more than simply bystanders; we have become the pigs themselves, but at what cost? We romanticize the idea of animal abuse by justifying it to no end and exploiting these horses by subjecting them to peril and bounding them to a life of misery.
Notorious for controversy, a campaign promise made by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to remove the carriage horses from Central Park must be met.
Animals should not be deprived of the unalienable rights upon which our country stands: liberty, life and the pursuit of happiness.
