We are taught from a young age that "Columbus sailed the ocean blue, in 1492," a short rhyme that burns into our memories the idea that Columbus "discovered" the Americas. When in truth, in Columbus's four trips to the "West Indies," he never once set foot in the continental United States. This fact, along with the horrible desecration of the Native American people and their culture as a whole, makes Christopher Columbus day an embarrassing statement about the United States. He effect on the start of the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade also had lasting effects on the African population in the Americas. The diseases, looting, and raping brought to the native people of the Caribbean is not exactly something a great country should be supporting through the celebration of Christopher Columbus Day.
