Some of our nation's largest military installations are named after individuals who took up arms against this nation in the Civil War: Forts Hood, Bragg, A.P.Hill, Benning, and six other installations are named for Confederate veterans. Continuing to name these installations after these individuals is an unnecessary insult to the thousands of black men and women who have served and died protecting our country. The President has unitary authority under AR 1-33 (2006) to revise the policies that govern the naming of military installations, and can change the current name of an installation pursuant to the same policies.
