The newest revision of Army Regulation 670-1 is discriminatory under the guise of good order and discipline. Issue 1. Tattoos.
Tattoos come from a warrior tradition, from polynesia to celts to the American service member. Disallowing enlisted from becoming officers due to tattoos is discriminatory. Not allowing new tattoos below the elbow or knee is purported to be for professionalism; however, I have seen no research to correlate the two. I know many good officers with sleeve tattoos (including General officers). This policy is being used to thin the herd, but the wrong people will be lost. High quality enlisted and comminioned officers may have tattoos.
Issue 2. Female Hair
The new female hair restrictions are clearly targeting black women. Enough said.
