The electoral college is not fairly representing the people. The college makes it so that the votes of Americans is smaller states (e.g. Rhode Island and Wyoming) count more than the votes of Americans living in a large state like California. This is because the big states give their votes to the little states.
The defense of the electoral college is that the candidates could only campaign in the large cities or states and win the election. This is not true and the candidates would still have to travel all around to win the election.
Also, we have had too many presidents that have one the majority in an electoral college but lost the popular vote and end up winning.
