The federal government subsidizes commodity crops at nearly $17 Billion/year. The abundance of corn and soybeans make sugars/fats some of the cheapest foods to produce and have resulted in most commercial foods containing corn sugars, hydrogenated oils and other products tied to obesity. Obesity rates in 6-11yo kids have quadrupled since 1970, 1/3 of adults are obese. Obesity related health care costs are set to rise $265 billion a year between 2008-2018, while annual Medicare spending is expected to increase by about $360 billion during the same period. Much of the rise in Medicare spending will be treating obesity-related diseases. Removing subsidies will not cure obesity but will remove the artificially low prices on cheap inputs, making healthier food more affordable in comparison.
