An undergraduate education has evolved to become the cost of entry for even the most basic professional success in the USA. As of Q4 2014, the average student loan burden hit a whopping $30,000 while the cost of an education itself is skyrocketing, particularly among public universities where state and federal money continues to decrease each year. With interest rates rising and unemployment and underemployment rates for recent grads stagnating (8.5% and 16.8% respectively for the class of 2014), we must do more to financially incentivize young people to invest in their futures by pursuing higher eduction.
There is simply no good reason that student loan interest shouldn't be 100% tax deductible. It's time to do better for our students and the future of this country.
