The Energy Policy Act of 2005 contained a provision known by some as the "Halliburton Loophole," which provides an exemption for gas drilling and extraction from requirements in the underground injection control (UIC) program of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). "Fracking" also has exemptions from the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. It is time for this process that injects water along with hundreds of chemicals underground to be tested for and regulated by the EPA so as to protect our valuable aquifer resources.
