Mandatory minimum sentencing has resulted in many thousands of people incarcerated with harsh sentences for non-violent crimes. These mandatory minimum sentences take the common sense judgement about individual cases out of the hands of judges and juries.
Our prisons are overflowing. The cost of maintaining these people in our prisons, as well as the cost to the communities from the loss of a potentially productive citizen, is significant.
Remove mandatory minimum sentencing for non-violent firearms offenses.
