South Korea, Netherlands, Japan, what do they have in common? They are all more advanced than the US. The US is falling behind in the tech race.
For years, the government has supported monopolies in the the internet markets, and big ISP's have little competition. Even when two compete, prices still stay high because these companies are happy. There aren't many new customers in this market anymore. The only new ones an ISP can get come from competitors. If they undercut their rivals, others will do the same, trimming profit for both.
Small areas are getting gigabit internet from companies like Google Fiber. This has had a great impact in those areas. But we need change faster than that. We need a faster, cheaper internet. We need what's made the american economy work for years: competition.
