"The New Colossus", a sonnet by Emma Lazarus is a wonderful work of art that speaks to the hopes and dreams of immigrants all over the world. The second verse has these words to say:
...cries she/With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me..."
I would argue that these words are no longer reflective of the USA. Immigration policy reflects this. The attitude of many Americans suggests that we don't want the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free. We avoid "the wretched refuse", "the homeless", look upon these people with disdain, never providing them with the help or dignity they deserve as our fellow human beings.
