One penny, worth 1 cent to a consumer, costs the US government nearly 2 cents to produce. Pennies have no buying power on their own, making their only purpose reaching exact change. The trouble with counting out exact change is that in our capitalist economy, taxes are not included nearly anywhere, and nobody wants to calculate what exact change will be before reaching the register. This means consumers either waste time for both themselves and others in line counting out pennies at checkout, or simply neglect to spend them. Solution: round "exact change" to the nearest nickel, and remove the penny from circulation. Australia, New Zealand, Finland, and the Netherlands have all done so successfully. Our economy could use the boost. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5UT04p5f7U
