The First Amendment to the United States Constitution states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." However, on August 21, 1952, this amendment to the document our country was founded upon was disregarded when the words "Under God" were added to the Pledge of Allegiance. By adding this phrase to a sentence that represents our nation, our government publicly supported the idea that "God" rules over us. This is also known as religion. Therefore, by adopting a phrase that supports a religion, Congress has gone against the First Amendment.
