The USDA is buying 7 million lbs of beef containing "Pink Slime" (ammonium hydroxide-treated ground connective tissue and meat scraps) and serving it up to America's school kids.
By some estimates Pink Slime, a cheap meat filler, is in 70% of ground beef sold at supermarkets and up to 25% of each American hamburger patty. (Jim Avalia, ABC News) In 2011 "Food Revolution" star Jamie Oliver made public calls for chains to abandon "slime" (mfd. by Beef Products Inc since 2001). The New York Times raised serious doubts about Pink Slime in a 2009 investigation of the product and found evidence that linked this ammoniated beef to dozens of cases of salmonella and E. coli (The Huffington Post, 1/27/2012)
If major food chains won't serve Pink Slime, our government should not serve it to our kids.
