Countless transgender women are unaware of the draft requirements that await them once they reach the age of majority. Once 18, these women, by one method or another, are notified that they must sign up for the draft, regardless of their transition status. Failure to register for the draft can place a transgender woman in a horrible legal predicament: potential penalty of 5 years in prison, and/or a fine of $250,000. Failure to register will also lead to being ineligible for FAFSA aid, a large number of government positions, and even restrict one's ability to obtain a driver's licence.
This must come to an end. Regardless of one's belief on the matter of the draft, transgender women are women, and must not be forced to do something based on their birth sex, an event out of their control.
