Remove the social security tax ceiling

Created by T.T. on January 10, 2013

Currently the ceiling is 113k. The rate is 6.2% paid by the employee and matched by the employer which totals 12.4%. The self-employed must pay the 12.4% in full. Lifting the ceiling and applying the flat rate to ALL earned income (capital gains) would allow for the lowering of the tax rate and still generate more revenue than the 1.1 trillion estimated for 2013. Currently the most that would be paid on/for one individual would be $14,012. Lift the ceiling and one making 5mil a year would have $620,000 paid, quite a difference. Does this equate to the rich paying more? Yes but we will never have a system in which every tax payer pays the exact same amount. This ensures that everyone pays the same percentage of their total income which is about as fair as it gets.
