A great deal of the corn planted on American soil is deserved of federal funds as it is one of the more significant inputs of our diets, providing not only table corn, but also corn syrup and sustenance for our cattle and chickens. Even so, corn is more than just a food. It has become a resource, accounting for 98% of the ethanol.
In 2007, American farmers planted 92.9 million acres of corn. Of that, 15 million acres were dedicated to ethanol production. This number will grow substantially in the coming years. We should not be subsidizing ethanol.
Corn based processed food is one of the biggest causes of obesity, cardiac problems and type-2 diabetes in this country. Together they cost 600 Billion dollars a year. Tax the source of health problem to fund Universal Healthcare.
