Scientology is not a religion. It is a commercial organization that charges upfront fees, restricts knowledge of its own belief system to members, and persecutes those who leave the organization or speak out against it.
Scientology only became tax-exempt after years of suing the IRS for tax-exempt status and eventually paying the IRS $12.5 million dollars.
In 1999, England declined to recognized Scientology as a religion. Here are their reasons:

Scientology has also been implicated in civil cases in the deaths of some members. The organization has been protected by its status as a religion.
We would like to see that status revoked and Scientology recognized for what it is: a money-making organization.
