The separation of church and state is a fundamental Constitutional value. Arguments based in theological beliefs have long misguided this nation's policy, both at the local and state level. These policies have spread misinformation and have harmed millions of excellent citizens. Policies that are based on "moral" arguments include but are not limited to: abstinence-only or abstinence-best education, which has been proven to be detrimental to the health of both men and women; the change to the Pledge of Allegiance to include "under God", which alienates millions of school children everyday; and many other discriminatory and exclusionary laws and policies.
The Framers wanted separation of church and state for the protection of both. Let us realize America as the free state it aspires to be.
