Remove Toxic Fire Retardants from Furniture and Baby Products

Created by J.L. on April 25, 2012

We call for the immediate removal of halogenated hydrocarbon flame retardant chemicals from furniture and baby products. Known developmental and neurological toxins make up 5-10% of the weight of foam in 25% of US furniture and 100% of California furniture. The incorporation of these chemicals into household products severely impairs childhood cognitive development. Flame retardant chemicals at this level provide only a few second delay in ignition, but emit much higher levels of carbon monoxide and other toxic gases when burned. Removing these ineffective and toxic chemicals from our consumer products will have a tremendous impact on the well being of millions of American children.
