Both "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance and "In God We Trust" in general were by-products of communist fear under the Eisenhower administration. Both of these sayings show a clear disregard for the separation of church and state, allowing the government to favor a particular religion. Though Christians are still the largest religious group in the United States, a large and growing number of citizens are of a different religion of or no religion at all. Having these sayings hammered into every day life, supported by the government, goes against their religious freedom. Some would argue that it isn't a big deal, that these citizens can just not say it and ignore it, but if it's really such a small issue, why not just remove the phrases and not give anyone a reason to complain?
