The penny costs 2.4 cents to make, yet the Mint produces 4 billion of them a year. Not only are they a burden on our strained budget, but they also have an opportunity costs, as they take up time between sales transactions. Furthermore, pennies aren't accepted by toll booths, vending machines, or laundromats, so good luck trying to use them there. Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the Netherlands, and Finland have all eliminated their pennies, rounding to the nearest five cents for all cash transactions. These countries have seen no rise in prices or drop in charitable donations as a result. Pennies are a literal dead weight on the economy, hindering trade and causing the Federal Government to lose tax payers money on every single one made. They must be eliminated.
